  1. A movement in late Victorian England that
  2. emphasized traditional values and rural
  3. living as a reaction against industrialism
  4. and urban society. For some, this meant 
  5. moving from city to country and becoming 
  6. self-supporting; for example, by growing 
  7. their own food. For others, their 
  8. participation was limited to encouraging a
  9. rebirth of rural crafts and traditions, such
  10. as lacemaking, quilting, and folk music.
  11. Movements loosely associated with back to the
  12. land include vegetarianism, the garden city
  13. idea, and conservation societies such as the
  14. National Trust that set out to preserve
  15. `unspoilt' features of the countryside. In
  16. the 1960s-80s many Americans took up this
  17. movement, some forming communes.
